Database Cleanup

In an effort to speed up the site, we’re going to be cleaning out some old, unused accounts from the database. These are accounts where the owners created a trial account, used it for the free month, and then never signed up. Accordingly, I expect that nobody in the world will be missing these accounts when we delete them.

To be clear: We aren’t deleting any accounts that actually have subscriptions. Also, we won’t delete accounts that had activity within the last six months. This is mainly to prune accounts that were created back in 2008 and 2009, and that are clearly not being used.

If you, for some reason, need to access an old account, but you never signed up for a subscription, just let me know. Similarly, if you have questions, just ping me on Twitter: @pearbudget.

Running some code deployments today

We’re going to be running some code deployments today. We’re hoping there won’t be downtime for anybody, but just wanted to mention it so you were aware.

Thanks!

Plan Your Peaceful Christmas (at Simple Mom)

For those of you who celebrate Christmas, hopefully there’s a “Christmas” category in your budget, and hopefully you’ve been setting aside some money for it so it won’t come out of the blue and throw everything out of whack.

But for those of you who’ve had to divert funds to other categories, or who weren’t thinking about December back in March when you set up your budget, Tsh at SimpleMom.net has some great advice, both for this year and for next.

For next year, she notes “This year, jot down every. single. expense associated with your holidays as you spend money, and next year, use that as a basic template for your holiday budget.”

For this year, she has a number of suggestions that are worth reading. Her whole piece is here — Plan Your Peaceful Christmas: Prepare the Budget — and is well worth checking out, especially if Christmas has been totally off your radar up until now.

Cooking on a Budget (on Ask MetaFilter)

One of my favorite sites for eclectic advice is Ask MetaFilter. In a span of about 10 minutes, you can get everything from “help me find this book from when I was a kid” to “I’m having this problem with my estranged sister … how do I handle it?” to “help me find movies where the good guy turns out to be a bad guy” to “how do you get your kids to sleep through the night?” Also, part of the appeal is that the commenters are thoughtful, critical thinkers who often have very good insights on the problems at hand.

Today, there was a good post: “How do I shop and cook to maximize my grocery budget?

I won’t bring the answers over here apart from saying that there are a lot of votes for the Dave Ramsey Special (beans and rice), and a couple of good comments that suggest doubling the size you cook, then saving the second serving for a later meal. Also, there’s this helpful heuristic: Dried → Canned → Fresh → Processed. I feel like there’s a mnemonic waiting to be created for that one. Debt Can Feel Prettybad? Debit Cards something something? I’m not sure.

ANYWAY, go check out the question on MetaFilter if you’re looking for good cheap food options.

Coffee and Donuts, On Us – Arlington, VA

This is super-last-minute, and I’m sorry about that (but, really, do longer-term plans ever really work out?). BUT, we’re in Arlington (VA) for the weekend (the trick-or-treating is better up here!) and I’d love to meet up with you for coffee and donuts. If you’re in Arlington and are available — either Sunday morning or early-afternoon — shoot me an e-mail (charlie@pearbudget.com) and let me know. We’ll hit Northside Social or something and can talk about PearBudget, budgeting in general, your hopes, fears, Halloween costume, and so on. Let me know!

Win a Free Year of PearBudget!

Over at Frugally Blonde, Liz has a one-year subscription to PearBudget that she’s giving away to one lucky reader. She also has a review of PearBudget up, but I’m guessing that if you’re reading this, you’re already giving PearBudget a shot … but everyone likes free PearBudget!

To enter the contest, all you need to do is to head over to her blog and comment on her PearBudget review / giveaway. That’s it. Easy as pie!

As always, we hope you win!

A Day in the Life

What’s a day in my life look like? What are the things that, as an entrepreneur, I think about? Those were the questions posed to me by Dr. Ram Ganeshan, operations professor at the Mason School of Business at The College of William and Mary.

In Dr. Ganeshan’s blog, Operations Buzz (designed by the great Veerle Peters), he investigates what it takes to run “smart and sustainable business operations,” and he asked me a few questions about what my day looks like.

You can check out my answers here: A Day in the Life: Pearbudget’s Charlie Park. In it, you’ll read a bit about how we started, some advice I have for budding entrepreneurs, and — oooh — a little bit about what I think about Mint and other competing services.

Thanks to Ram for the interview and the piece!

PearBudget on The Early Show!

PearBudget was mentioned this morning on the CBS News program The Early Show! I’ve embedded the video below, but if you want to read the associated piece, it’s here: How to Save Big Bucks at the Supermarket. Special thanks to All You magazine editor Amy Goodman, and especially to PearBudget user Michelle who wrote in to All You recommending us. (Michelle, if you see this, e-mail us? We’d love to thank you!)

In the video, Amy notes that Michelle saved $1,500 over two months by using PearBudget. That’s awesome. Here’s the piece:

Thanks again to Michelle, Amy, and Erica for the great piece!

So it’s been a while, right?

So it’s been a while, right? I’m sorry for the radio silence. More coming soon, with some new features, some upcoming “coffee and donuts” dates, new mentions of PearBudget in the media, and other fun stuff. Looking forward to sharing them with you.
